Causes of Farmers’-Herders’ Conflicts in Adamawa State, Nigeria

Abstract

Farmers-herders’ conflict is importunate in various parts of Nigeria, causing a significant socio-economic penalty. This study aimed to analyse the causes of farmers-herders’ conflicts in Adamawa State. Survey research design was adopted for the study. 400 respondents (farmers and herders) were sampled for the study. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was employed to examine the factors of farmers-herders conflicts using SPSS AMOS, Through quantitative data analysis, we found that social, environmental, and economic factors causes farmer’s-herders conflicts and that the conflict has a negative impact on the affected communities in Adamawa state and the country at large through various ways: this includes loss of lives, loss of livestock, destruction of crops, displacement, and increase expenses on security measures which has heighten existing poverty level and hinder economic development in the affected areas. It was recommended among other things that policy interventions such as promoting of ranching and modernizing livestock management through the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), establishing Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) settlements (though this has faced challenges), and enacting legislation prohibiting open grazing in some states among other that can tackles the primary factors of conflicts and encourages peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders are essential to alleviate its negative impact on the people of Adamawa State and Nigeria at large.
